FALSAC Lives in an Environment

Building up a dynamic system simulation to explore the nature of agency and life (May 2022)

Thesis Presentation at ITP, NYU Tisch

In The Restless Clock, Riskin states that “a thing cannot be conscious without having agency, but it can have agency without being conscious.” What is the nature of agency and life? This question is debated in many fields, including philosophy and biology. Agency, a seemingly more primitive term than consciousness or sentience, grabs my attention. Building on selected features for what I think a living system should have, emphasizing the concept of homeostasis, I explore to what extent a system could be alive and where a “seemingly existing agency” could exist.

In FALSAC Lives in an Environment, I fantasize about the internal and external environment of FALSAC, Fantasized Artificial Living System Alike Centrolenidae(glass frog). Inspired by concepts from philosophy and biology, I make FALSAC's "seemingly existing agency" hidden in FALSAC's different states, implying several critical abilities FALSAC owned to survive. Through this piece, I explore the nature of agency and life in the context of survival.
